Irena Sendler awarded the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award

Posted: 7th May, 2009

At a special event in Berlin, to coincide with Audrey's 80th birthday, the 2009 Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award was posthumously awarded to Irena Sendler (1910 – 2008), who saved 2,500 Jewish children during World War II. As a member of the Polish resistance, Sendler helped to smuggle children out of the Warsaw Ghetto and hid them with foster families.

The award was presented at the Timeless Audrey exhibit, currently at the Hauptbahnhof underground station, by Sean Hepburn-Ferrer and was collected on behalf of the Sendler family by Poland's Ambassador to Germany, Marek Prawda.
