Audrey’s Oscar Dress to be Auctioned

Posted: November 7th, 2011

The dress Audrey was wearing when she won her Best Actress Oscar for Roman Holiday in 1953 is set to be auctioned on November 29th by Kerry Taylor Auctions in London.

The ivory lace gown, created by legendary costume designer Edith Head, was also worn by Audrey for the final scene in Roman Holiday and was modified for her appearance at the Oscars - making it unique in that this was the only time a dress used in a movie was worn to receive an Academy Award. Edith Head also picked up the Oscar for Best Costume Design.

The dress has been valued between £40,000 to £60,000. But given recent valuations of Audrey’s dresses have been considerably under the mark there’s a good chance this dress will fetch much more than the valuation.

Also up for auction, two Audrey related lots: a collection of press clippings and personal correspondence relating to Audrey’s planned marriage to James Hanson (estimate: £400 - £600), and an autographed photo of Audrey as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (estimate: £500 - £900).

More details can be found on the Kerry Taylor Auctions website:

I was lucky enough to go to the auction and see and TOUCH the dress! I was so happy, but then i witnessed nobody bid for it- and it didn't sell, until a day later when a private collector bought it for 70,000 pounds! :) x
